Tidewater Direct Expands Bindery to Meet Demand

Web Offset Printing Company Purchases Paper Cutters and Other Equipment

Centreville, MD, 9/26/2012 – Tidewater Direct, a web offset printing company with 3 locations nationally, announced capital investments on Tuesday to improve bindery throughput in its Centreville, Maryland plant. Tidewater Direct has seen an increasing need for faster turnaround and higher capacity in this plant, which offers direct mail printing and pharmaceutical printing. Among the specific products it offers, new high volume generic inserts and letters, buck slips, and laser cut sheets require the need for capital investment. Specifically, it was Tidewater’s cutting and shrink wrapping capacity that required upgrading.

With an arsenal of 12 paper folders on the production floor, Tidewater elected to double its cutting capacity to more appropriately match it's printing and folding capacity. To meet this increasing demand, Tidewater Direct purchased 2 45” paper cutters, an air removing jogger, and 2 air tables. The air removing jogger saves labor by jogging press sheets and removing the air automatically, and also creates cutting consistencies that are important to size critical work. When sheets are properly jogged, the paper cutters purchased by Tidewater can be accurate to 1/64th of an inch.

“Our clients demand increasingly fast turn-around times and quality, and we intend to give it to them,” explained Ken Boone, President. “Without our new Sunday 2000 Press, it was clear that we needed an upgrade. The new press will require even more cutting capacity, so we are ensuring that we have the infrastructure to handle the demand we expect from this new press. The cutters will also better serve our clients that produce laser cut sheets at our sister facility in Baltimore Maryland.”

Replacing a manual L-Bar style sealer and semi-automatic shrink tunnel, Tidewater sees production benefits to upgrading to an automatic wrapper. Expecting to increase their throughput significantly, Tidewater will be in a better position to pursue larger shrink wrapping projects. Most importantly, it will better service its clients in the check printing and laser cut sheet markets that require this type of packaging. Many of those clients are serviced from Baltimore which specializes in continuous forms printing.

“It was easy to see that the bottleneck in our facility was our cutting and wrapping capacity. The new cutting equipment will double our capacity, which will significantly enhance workflow in our bindery,” said Geoffrey Eisenberg, Vice President of Operations. “Shrink wrapping is a niche that naturally lends itself to wholesale commercial printing. We have clients that are increasingly requiring their products to be batched and wrapped in specific counts. The automatic (shrink) wrapper will ensure that we keep up with the demand."

Tidewater reported that it expects equipment to be installed within two weeks without any disruption to current production.
